Book Launch for Dark Bird

March 30, 2024 @ 2:00 pm - 4:30 pm

You are invited to the book launch for Dark Bird, poetry by Sam Schmidt (Galileo Press, 2024)
The event will include a reading from the book, light refreshments, and end with a conversation and mingling. Virginia Crawford will host the event, and fellow Baltimore-based poet Matt Hohner will read from his forthcoming award-winning book, At the Edge of a Thousand Years. Copies of Dark Bird will be available for sale.

In his new collection, Schmidt offers poems that begin and end with an ordinary tree.  From this modest reference point, the book travels in a widening trance to explore love, family, politics, philosophy, and old wounds. Acutely observant, ruefully funny, and consistently daring, Schmidt speaks with a voice that is both contemporary and evergreen.

Praise for Dark Bird
“Dark Bird grows quietly toward something true. Its vulnerability roots deeply through an impersonal spiritual journey. These poems slowly expand and blossom leaving you with hope, or something stronger.” –Edgar Silex, author of Through All the Displacements

Brief author bio:
Schmidt’s books include Suburban Myths (Beothuk Books 2012) and now Dark Bird. For more than a decade he edited and published WordHouse, a newsletter for Maryland writers, and hosted the reading series WordHouse at the Minás Gallery. His work has been published in such journals as Passager, Free State Review, and Gargoyle. He is a two-time recipient of the Maryland State Individual Artist Grant and has a Master’s Degree in Comparative Literature from Johns Hopkins University. His wife Virginia Crawford, also a poet, is the author of questions for water (Apprentice House Press 2021). Schmidt lives and works in Baltimore.
