Estate Planning 101
January 25, 2023 @ 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm
Join us in the VLP Library for a presentation by local attorney and neighbor, Alice Young, on the topic of Wills and other documents that protect your legacy and maximize your giving impact (a.k.a. minimize your taxes). Light refreshments & beverages will be provided. Free childcare available.
Does your loved one have the papers needed to allow someone to assist them if they fall ill or become unable to manage their affairs? Have they granted you a written power of attorney or healthcare directive allowing you to manage their finances or healthcare decisions if they can no longer handle their own checkbook, doctors’ appointments, and household decisions? If ‘no’, you may end up before a court seeking to be appointed as the guardian for finances or for healthcare, an expensive and time-consuming process.
Planning in advance can avoid the costly delays of guardianship. All adults should make a financial power of attorney and a healthcare directive. These documents can be easily updated: If your health or finances change, or if you simply change your mind about who you nominated as a decision-maker, you can make new documents reflecting your updates.
Estate planning doesn’t need to be expensive or complicated. It just needs to be done. Writing down your plan while you are well and healthy helps prevent the difficulty and grief your loved ones may experience when discovering that a court proceeding is needed if an accident or illness renders you unable to manage your affairs. Working with an attorney to develop and implement your plan provides further assurance that the agents you appoint and the guidance you provide will be honored when the need arises. It is never too early to plan, but it can be too late.
